Night Kaneohe view from middle way to heaven around 3am |
All the way by stairs |
H3 Highway and Tunnels |
Kaneohe view before sunrise |
Walked this way in the dark. Can you imagine? |
Yes, it is very dangerous if you go wrong. |
Cloudy but soon sun will show up |
Very beautiful...nothing to say. |
Pali lookout out there |
This is Hawaii but be sure to bring a jacket and dry clothes. It was very cold when I arrived at the summit because you got sweat and very cold on top of hike. |
Finally, sun is showing up |
Kualoa Ranch over there. Chinamans Hat too. |
No tiredness if you see the beautiful landscape! |
One of my favorites hike |
You cannot imagine you can actually hike up to the radio station which is placed the top of this hike when you see it from the bottom or around town. It is way high this place. Yes, it is crazy hike.
If you want to try this hike, you must show up before the security guard comes ( I am not sure at this time but when my time, the guard came around 6 am) or after the guard left (around 4 or 5 pm according to my friend). Otherwise he makes you stop at the gate and let you leave. Actually, he is a nice guy. I mean one of the guards. Others are I don't know. If you have a good luck even you are late to arrive, some guards might let you go.
Anyway, I arrived there around 2:30 am.
Parked the car at the bottom village. (There is no parking lot so you need to park your car on the road.)
Followed the other group to the ladder. However, we lost because they lost. But of course, it was very dark and no sign around there. What you can aim is highway. Anyway we finally found the gate and ladder.
There was no security guard of course. We were very early. We started climb the ladder=stairs. It's night time and stairs were kinda wet and slippery. Stairs width is very narrow so you cannot pass people in front. First part of this hike is very hard. Sometimes stairs's angle is more than 90 degree I guess. Very dangerous.
But it was getting easy.
As I mentioned, it is dark if you go early morning so you don't see anything. It is good because if you see everything, you might be scared of height as you are going up so hard. (On the way back is very great view if you are ok with height. I am good at this:p)
There are some places you can take a rest like little bit big space.
On the top of this hike, there is a pillbox which used to be a radio station during Wold War 2. You can enter inside and take a rest until sunrise. However, as you know, this is very popular hike and many hikers are taking a rest there. When we got there, the place was packed and there is no space to take a rest. However, it was rainy and too windy outside. It was like a winter mountain. We had to go inside otherwise we were going to freeze to die. So we tried to make a space for myself to be alive. No joke. I regretted I should have brought dry clothes. Anyway, we were waiting for the sunrise about 2 or 3 hours there. Tried not to use phone for its battery. What you can do is try to get close to people to receive warmness.
The time has come. Finally.
It was soooo beautiful. It's bright and you can see everything down there.
No words.
That makes you not feel tired but excited. You feel like you did it.
On the way back, you can enjoy every views of mountains, ocean, sky, clouds, houses....
You want to take pictures every single views as I did so make sure you have full of spaces in your camera or iPhone :)
When we finally came down, there was a security guard and joking to us like check-in the police out there please. It was funny. We found a shortcut to the parking place afterwords.
This was a great experience in my life. If you have time, you had better to try this. It is worthy in your life I think. Fun time.
What to bring: Lighting, globe (better), water, jacket, dry clothes, Camera, some food if you get hungry, and towel
Good luck!
Mahalo,
